Skills

Our skills are based upon The Dresden Files Roleplaying Game.

Skills

Each Human player is allowed to choose 4 skills from the list below. If you are Metahuman, you can choose 1. These skills are areas your character is an EXPERT in.

For example, I may not choose the skill of 'weapons' but I still can shoot a gun. The catch is that because it is not my skill, I will not hit a bullseye or aim perfectly each time I shoot.

If your character chooses to work for Omega Watch they will automatically gain either the Guns skill or the Fists skill.

If you choose to work for Vanguard Genetics, you will automatically gain the Scholarship or Resources skill.

Human skills

Alertness

A measure of your character's passive awareness - his ability to stay on his toes and react to sudden changes in the environment. High Alertness characters strike early in a fight, tend to pick up on details of a scene simply by entering it, and are rarely surprised. (Consider grabbing if you are a: bodyguard, criminal, cop, firefighter, operative, private eye, or a spy)

Useful against: Stealth

Athletics

Your general physical capability. Athletics covers running, jumping, climbing, and other broadly physical activities you might find in a track and field event. Characters with high Athletics move further and faster than the rest of us. (Consider grabbing if you are a: athlete, cop, operative, or soldier)

Similar to Paladin Level 1 Agility

Burglary

The ability to overcome security systems, from alarms to locks. This includes knowledge of those systems and the ability to assess them. (Consider grabbing if you are a: criminal, cop, operative, private eye, or spy)

It’s an alternative to resources and may be useful against it. Player businesses and homes, and factions must have prior player consent. Vanguard and Omega Watch require prior administration consent.

Contacts

Gives the player a NPC network from within or without the city to discover, receive, or otherwise help disseminate information beneficial to the player's character’s goals.. Characters are connected, always with an ear to the ground, their fingers on the pulse of the city. Information ON other players’ characters can only be ascertained through consent and proper role play procedures. (Consider grabbing if you are a: celebrity, reporter, private eye, or spy)

Craftsmanship

The understanding of how stuff works, reflecting from your practical know-how when it comes to using tools effectively. Characters with high Craftsmanship are handy around the house and under the hood of the car. It’s a handy skill along with burglary and/or resources for the creation of armor or weapons.(Consider grabbing if you are a: inventor, mechanic, soldier, or scientist)

Deceit

The ability to lie… Well. Be it through word or deed, it's ability to convey falsehoods convincingly. Characters with deceit can easily seem much different than they actually are. They are masters of misdirection and they paint a sheen of seeming truth over the darkest lies. (Consider grabbing if you are a: criminal, spy, or politician)

Use against: Empathy and Investigation

Discipline

Your ability to stay focused on your goals and actions despite distractions as well as the ability to protect yourself from the psychological fallout of awful or scary events and attempted mental intrusions. Characters with strong Discipline rarely let fear get the best of them and can perform a wide variety of stressful tasks without breaking their concentration. (Consider grabbing if you are a: bodyguard, criminal, cop, doctor, firefighter, journalist, soldier, or spy)

Useful against: Intimidation and Telepathy

Driving

Driving is the ability to operate a vehicle in extraordinary circumstances -- driving fast through busy streets, avoiding police, or driving in the rainy dark without headlights. Driving also covers other vehicles like boats, planes, or helicopters. (Consider grabbing if you are a criminal, cop, operative, or spy)

Empathy

The ability to be sensitive and compassionate to what people are feeling, being in tune with other people’s emotions. This can be handy if you are trying to spot a liar or you want to tell someone what that person wants to hear. It's also useful for keeping up your guard during a social conflict. Characters adept at Empathy are very perceptive about people and their motives.(Consider grabbing if you are a: bodyguard, celebrity, cop, criminal, journalist, lawyer, politician, private eye, spy, or Vanguard staff)

Good Example: Sympathizing with someone and feeling their pain and emotions, being there and helping someone who may be struggling.

Bad Example: The assumption of knowing someone’s thoughts or feelings or reading them.

Useful against: Deceit

Endurance

The ability to keep performing physical activity despite fatigue or injury. It's a measure of your body's resistance to shock and effort. Characters with Endurance can take more punishment than others and keep going long after the competition has tuckered out. (Consider grabbing if you are a: athlete, bodyguard, cop, criminal, firefighter, operative, spy)

Equivalent to Level 1 Paladin Endurance

Fists

The ability to hold your own in a fistfight, with no weapons available but your bare hands. With specialized training, this may include the practice of a more disciplined kind of fisticuffs, such as martial arts. (Consider grabbing if you are a: bodyguard, cop, criminal, spy, soldier, operative, or Vanguard staff)

Guns

Sometimes you need to shoot things. Characters with Guns are masters of accuracy. (Consider grabbing this if you are a bodyguard, cop, criminal, private eye, spy, soldier, operative, or Vanguard staff)

Memory

History - You always have the receipts. Memory is your ability to recall events with perfect accuracy. This includes tracking time and direction with uncanny precision. (Consider grabbing if you are a: educator, journalist, lawyer, operative, politician, scientist, soldier, or student)

Intimidation

With Intimidation, you exude menace, choose exactly the right words to chill others to the bone, and get people to lose their cool in an instant. (Consider grabbing if you are a: bodyguard, celebrity, cop, criminal, educator, lawyer, operative, politician, private eye)

Useful against: Contacts (ex: intimidate a source into silence) and investigation

Investigation

This skill is used to actively and plausibly look for clues and put together a case against someone or solve a mystery surrounding people, places, and things when employed in role play, like searching a crime scene or trying to spot a hidden enemy that you know is somewhere near. Characters with Investigation may discover the most hidden clues with effort and attention. When they focus their attention on something, they can perceive details more fully and deeply than others. Players must be especially careful and considerate of other players when using this skill to avoid being considered metagaming. (Consider grabbing if you are a: cop, journalist, lawyer, operative, private eye, scientist, or spy)

Good Example: Think Nancy Drew. Searching for clues at a crime scene and putting them together to solve a mystery/crime.

Bad Example: Not actually searching for evidence, using NPCs to find clues to come to an immediate conclusion by just walking into a room.

Journalism

The platform to publish what you're investigating through an established media outlet. This goes hand in hand with investigation.(Consider grabbing if you are a: journalist, blogger, or reporter)

Languages

You speak more than two languages fluently (capped at 5). Languages are part of a good classical education. Please list your languages in your profile. (Consider grabbing if you would like to speak more than English)

Medicine

The ability to care for wounds in life threatening situations. This is a necessity for anyone in the medical field - EMTs, nurses, and doctors. Additionally, Medicine can be used to stabilize you or your companions. (Consider grabbing this if you anticipate getting hurt frequently. Hospitals can be expensive.)

Useful Against: Injuries caused by Guns, Fists, and Weapons

Performance

Your overall artistic ability, covering the gamut of endeavors that involve putting creative works before an audience (sketching, painting, dance, music, writing, acting, etc.) Characters with Performance are incredibly creative individuals. You will not be able to have a career in the performance industry if you do not have this skill. (Consider grabbing if you are a: artist, celebrity, musician, professional dancer)

Presence

Presence is a multi-faceted skill, representing attributes of leadership, reputation, and charisma. Presence is a measure of social toughness-- whether or not you'll flinch and lose face in front of others, and how your image stands up to scrutiny and/or attack. (Consider grabbing if you are a: artist, athlete, bartender, celebrity, designer, journalist, lawyer, operative, politician, spy, or Vanguard staff)

Useful against: Deceit, Intimidation, Investigation

Rapport

The flipside of intimidation. Your ability to talk with people in a friendly fashion, make a good impression, and perhaps convince them to see your side of things. Characters with Rapport can make strong first impressions and they make easy, friendly conversation in any social scene. (Consider grabbing if you are a: bartender, cop, educator, hairstylist, journalist, librarian, nurse, politician, small business owner, or spy)

Useful against: Intimidation

Resources

A measure of your available wealth and/or assets and resources. Characters with Resources can buy their way into or out of most situations and can easily afford the finest luxuries in life. (Consider grabbing if you are rich)

Useful along with craftsmanship in the creation of armor and weapons. All armor and weapons created must get approval from Elijah Mason (JazJones Resident).

Scholarship

Book knowledge. Questions covered by Scholarship include those of history, literature, and the sciences both soft and hard. (Consider grabbing if you are a: doctor, educator, journalist, lawyer, librarian, politician, private eye, programmer, psychologist, scientist, student, or Vanguard staff)

Stealth

The ability to remain unseen and unheard. Characters with Stealth are like ghosts, passing through the shadows with only the barest whisper of sound. Stealth can be directly opposed by Alertness or Investigation. Please work that out with your scene partner. (Consider grabbing if you are a: bodyguard, cop, criminal, journalist, operative, private eye, or spy)

Survival

Covers hunting, trapping, tracking, fire building, and animal handling. Characters with Survival are adept at riding horses, can survive nearly indefinitely by living off the land, and can track a man in the wilderness for days. (Consider grabbing if you are an operative, spy, or soldier)

Weapons (Melee)

Weapons - The skill of fighting with tools: swords, knives, axes, clubs, whips, etc. The exact weapon is more a choice of style than anything else, as it covers everything from fencing to a brawl using broken bottles and chair legs. Characters with Weapons are familiar with a variety of "old school" weapons and wield them with deadly accuracy. (Consider grabbing if you may need to fight with weapons)
